Olive grew up in Templeton, about 200 miles northwest of Los Angeles. After settling in South Pasadena to raise a family, she returned to Templeton often for lengthy stays with her best friend Cecelia Bierer Fruits. Daughter Margaret recalled long summers in the rural setting, and even attended school there at age 11. Grandchildren Judy and Bob also visited and remember water being drawn from a well, and the daily undertaking of preparing meals: "There was talk of chickens getting their heads cut off and pickling pigs' feet," Bob recalls. The Fruits were such an integral part of Rowley life, they were included in the 1933 home movie Family Album by Margaret & Kingdon Kerr.
