Elwood was named after Elwood Alexander, adopted father of his mother, Josephine.
Elwood & Ada were frequent travel companions of Kingdon & Margaret. These photos represent just a few of their trips together.
In 1927, Elwood (22) and Kingdon (20) crossed the Pacific with pal, Sanford Wheeler, on a cattle freighter. Thus started a four-month adventure in the Southern hemisphere, which included one remote village on Fiji, where they were the first white men some indigenous people had seen.
This geyser in Rotura, New Zealand, erupts about every three months, shooting boiling water and steam to 80 feet. Kingdon, Sanford & Elwood, flanked by Maori guides, were lucky to catch it.
